• Integrity – “The assurance of data non-alteration and non-repudiation; i.e. that the information has not been altered in transmission and that both the sender and recipient of the information are who they claim to be...”

• Availability – “The assurance of timely and reliable access to data for authorized users; i.e. that information or resources are available when required and at rate which is fast enough to allow its consumers to perform their intended functions and tasks in the most efficient manner possible...”

Note that when any one of these objectives is compromised the inherent value of the trusted computing infrastructure and even the data itself decreases exponentially.

In practice achieving these objectives requires a comprehensive “Defense in Depth” approach, the specifics of which vary from company to company based on a variety of factors such as the type of business, type of data, specific requirements and other variables but there are two specific areas common to all businesses which must be addressed -- the internal network infrastructure and the perimeter.

The internal network infrastructure is analogous to the basic structure of your home (i.e. foundation, plumbing, electrical, etc.), even though you don’t ever really see or think about them once your home is complete, they must be properly designed, built and installed for your home to operate properly.

Similarly, the perimeter of your network (i.e. where the internal Intranet meets the external Internet) can be likened to your homes doors and windows, and the effectiveness of the mechanisms which protect those (i.e. locks, security system, etc.) is also predicated on their overall quality, proper installation and operation.
